Demulcents

Demulcent: soothes and heals irritated or inflamed mucous membranes

Demulcents are bland, mucilaginous, or oily agents that form a protective coating over irritated or inflamed mucosa. They stimulate increased bronchial and bladder mucous production, soothing and healing the mucous membranes.

In the GI, demulcents are trophorestorative to the intestinal mucosa, supporting mucosal cell integrity and regeneration and helping to optimize bowel tone. They soothe burning pain, soften hard stools, and help heal ulcerative lesions. Demulcents can be useful as base herbs in herbal formulas when ulcers or other mucosal lesions are present.
